Reaching out to our Society and Community

A day does not go by that church members, with families and friends, have reached out to support others in our neighborhood, the greater Richmond area, across our country and throughout the world. From providing critical groceries to a passing hungry neighbor… to packaging shoe boxes with toothpaste and toys for children across the globe, our department vision is to enable Battery Park Christian Church members to demonstrate our faith in action. We strive to be known in our community as a constructive, effective congregation addressing and mitigating social needs and issues. We do this every day by creating awareness of needs and social concerns by recommending actions and fostering opportunities for the sharing of the congregation’s resources and talents to provide ministry to people in need. Our members amazingly rise to meet every need. We also share our blessings by opening our doors for groups in the area to use our building for meetings, summer camps and study.

Ministry Events we offer:

  • CARITAS: Annually 35+ guests are served breakfast, lunch and dinner and provided a warm place to sleep, showers, haircuts and access to laundry facilities during Caritas week in January
  • Christmas Family: Needy families are supported during Christmas from Henry Clay Elementary School with gifts, needed household supplies and gift cards to help them through the holidays
  • CARE-A-VAN: A Free Monthly Health Clinic through Bon Secours. An average of 20 92 patients of all ages without insurance are served per month. Nutritious snacks are provided to everyone and every child receives a free book thanks to generous member donations and a grant from Reach Out And Read. For the months with 5 weeks, Bon Secours schedules an additional clinic at BPCC because of our location, friendly volunteers and facility
  • Food Drives for Central Virginia Food Bank and St. Thomas Food Pantry.  Food donations, plus many bags of groceries are also given to those stopping by the church in need
  • Santa Breakfast and Photos with Santa: To help families continue to enjoy a holiday tradition, families from the neighborhood and across Richmond enjoy a pancake breakfast and free photos with Santa. Activities and treats for children round out the fun
  • Community Festivals: We have been reaching out to our local community through various events. Wet ‘n Water Festival and Pumpkin Festival bringing the community together for fellowship and to raise money to address social needs such as building a well in Kenya. These social events bring people of all backgrounds together as we enjoy fun, food, and fellowship.
  • Emergency Funds: These funds are allocated to help people with needs for utilities, rent, bus fare
  • Global Supply Drives: Partnering with other area churches and non-profits, we collect shoes, clothing and medical supplies for India, South Africa and disasters worldwide
  •  Health Kits and donations to global, national and local charities are provided by the Christian Women’s Fellowship
  • Holiday donations to area non-profits are made by CIS on behalf of the congregation every December
  • Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Ministry – BPCC has been the city of Richmond’s Relay Center for this ministry. Each November we open our doors to receive hundreds of shoe boxes from across the city
  • Ronald McDonald House support – Pop-Tops Collection and Monthly Dinners for families whose children are in the hospital, many of which are located just miles from the Ronald McDonald House
