Battery Park Christian Church has always recognized the importance extending Christian love to people around the globe. Here are some of the ways:
Week of Compassion – a year-round fund responding to disaster and emergencies wherever they happen. One week in February we join with other Disciples congregations to collect a special offering.
Every one and one half days, relief from the Week of Compassion funds are requested. Just in the year 2010. Here’s a small part of the list from 2010. * Pakistan – flash flooding * Uganda – mudslides * Madagascar, cyclone relief * Zambia, flood relief * Sudan, emergency relief * Mali, drought relief * China, mudslides * Haiti (12), earthquake * Argentina, tornado response * Guatemala, flood relief
Also part of the Week of Compassion is the Women’s Empowerment Fund. This fund will educate, train, and empower women all over the world and here in North America.
Through Week of Compassion, we have responded to the needs of families in Disciples congregations in Des Moines, Ames, and Colfax, Iowa, and we are continuing to monitor the situation in Middle Tennessee, and will respond as we hear of needs.
The fund is distributed with the cooperation of World Council of Churches, and is ranked among the best managed charities, 100 highest ranking. http://www.weekofcompassion.org/
There are four Disciples Mission Fund Special Day Offerings received each year: http://www.disciplesmissionfund.org/
Easter Offering supports the General Ministries of the church, covering various needs from Christian Unity, to Oversees Ministries, to the Pension Fund and more.
Pentecost Offering supports new church development.
Thanksgiving Offering provides direct support to Disciples colleges and universities.
Christmas Offering supports Regional Ministries. In 33 regions across the U.S. and Canada, ministers are nurtured and congregations are provided opportunities for work and worship. From camps and conferences, to the funding required for calling new pastors, our Disciples regions are supported through the special Christmas offering.
Reconciliation Offering Recognizing that the body of Christ is made up of members from every tongue, hue and culture, it is the Disciples of Christ intention to be a Pro-Reconciling/Anti-Racist church - a church where the gifts of all of God’s children are honored and shared.
Battery Park members also support and cooperate with local social service projects such as the Bon Secours Care-A-Van Health Clinic, Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Box Ministries, Christmas gifts for needy families, and other efforts as the need arises.
